A large telehandler fell off the back of a flatbed truck traveling on Route 8/25 southbound Tuesday morning, creating an odd spectacle on Railroad Avenue and a severe traffic backup for more than an hour and a half.
The accident happened just before 11 a.m. when the truck, traveling southbound near Railroad Avenue, lost the lift, knocking a light pole off the edge of the highway and leaving the machinery dangling for more than a half hour.
The Lull off-road telehandlert was up-righted at 11:30 a.m., but emergency crews were still working to clear the scene until about 12:45 p.m., State Police said. The on-ramp to Interstate 95 northbound remained blocked off, causing delays for several miles.
One wheel from the telehandler hooked on the wall along the embankment, preventing it from falling onto Railroad Avenue, where it likely would have taken out power lines on the way down, firefighters said.
Two heavy-duty wreckers with cranes were used to pull the forklift back up onto the highway.
Railroad Avenue was blocked off between Myrtle Avenue and Warren Street while crews worked to clear the scene.
State police and Bridgeport firefighters responded to the accident. There were no reported injuries.
