A construction worker was hospitalized with critical injuries Monday after the bulldozer he was operating rolled down a gravel pit embankment.
The accident happened a little after 11 a.m. at the Altaview Concrete gravel pit at 500 South 6800 West in West Valley City.
"We had a gentlemen who was working on one of the bulldozers over here and actually got too close to the edge somehow and went down. [He] fell about 40 feet. The bulldozer rolled, it ejected him and some of the equipment landed on top of him," said West Valley Fire Chief Bob Fitzgerald.
The victim was identified as 50-year-old Mark Dean. He was transported to the University of Utah Hospital by air and was listed in critical condition, according to Fitzgerald.
Mine safety and health administration continue to investigate the scene looking for issues that may have contributed to the accident.
Dean is an employee of Kilgore Construction.
