A construction worker is dead after suffering significant injuries from a roof collapse in a Downtown Syracuse building on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred on the ninth floor of the Snow Building on East Washington Street, which is located behind the University Building.
The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Steven Pallotta of Liverpool. He was working for JS Development conducting demolition work on an office located in the building.
Pallotta was on a ladder while taking down a piece of concrete and lathe that was approximately 15 feet by 15 feet. The piece of ceiling fell on Pallotta, causing a severe head injury.
The worker was taken to Upstate University Hospital in “very serious condition,” according to Syracuse Police Sgt. Tom Connellan.
He was pronounced dead at 1:40 p.m.
The worker was wearing a hard hat at the time of the incident.
Representatives from the Syracuse City Codes Department responded to the scene and indicated that the company had proper permits to conduct the operation.
OSHA and the Syracuse Police Department are investigating the incident.
Calling hours for Pallotta will be held Friday from 4pm to 7pm at St. Michael’s Parish Center in Central Square. His funeral will be held at 11am Saturday, which will also be held at Michael’s Parish Center.
