A worker died Saturday in a gruesome construction accident in the middle of a residential neighborhood, police said.

The man, whose identity had not been released by authorities late Saturday, was in the driver’s seat of the cab of a truck just before noon when a cable pulling a trash container onto the truck snapped and whipped through the back windshield, Lt. Randolph Homer said.

The severed cable struck him in the back of the head and caused massive trauma, he said.

The worker died at the scene at 1307 84th St., Homer said. His body remained in the cab with a drop cloth placed over the front windshield for more than an hour while authorities conducted an investigation.

The truck was marked Champion Construction of Ridgefield Park, and the trash bin was filled with construction debris from the property. A backhoe rested at the site of the house along with the truck and trash container, which will be towed as part of the investigation, Homer said.

Mike Abbasi, supervisor for Champion Construction and Demolition Inc., said the driver was working as a subcontractor hired to remove the trash container.

Abbasi did not comment further on the incident because it is under investigation.

"The man’s family is with us right now, and we are trying to comfort them," Abbasi added.

A neighbor who did not wish to be identified said the house was sold about five months ago and renovations, including installing new windows and fixing the basement, were under way. The property was also being landscaped, he said.

Officials from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration were notified and are investigating, Homer said.
