A worker in a crane basket several stories above the ground was burned Friday morning when a strong gust of wind blew him into a power line, authorities said.

The man atop the crane was working on the demolition of an old glass manufacturing building in the 1400 block of West Fourth Street when at about 11:20 a.m. he made contact with the cable, Contra Costa Fire Battalion Chief Alan Hartford said.

Several co-workers at the industrial site pointed out a charred metal side rail of the blue cherry picker the man was standing in.

Hartford said the man was conscious afterward, but sustained significant burns on his face, chest and arms. A medical helicopter took the man to UC Davis Medical Center.

CAL-OSHA officials will conduct further investigations of the incident, Hartford said.
