The Occupational Health and Safety Authority is investigating the case of a number of employees carrying out infrastructural work unguarded on the Regional Road’s Ġużè Ellul Mercer Bridge, as reported by this newspaper, it confirmed in a statement yesterday

The investigation started after The Malta Independent passed on photos following the OHSA’s request for more information on the matter. The photos were taken on 27 October and published the following day.

The photos showed a construction worker who did not take any precautions against falling off the bridge. The work involved walking along the edge of the bridge, outside its railing. The workers were replacing the guardrails on the heavily-used bridge, located on the Regional Road just before the tunnel leading to St Julian’s, in the wake of two bad traffic accidents which saw vehicles crashing into the barriers since the beginning of the year.
