A CRANE driver died after a heavy machine toppled over at Tilbury Docks.
Emergency services were called to the docks at 1.37pm on Sunday, following reports the driver, believed to be in his mid-40's and from the local area, was involved in a serious accident.
A rapid response car arrived in five minutes followed by an ambulance, and the air ambulance was also called.
Paramedic Ricky Walker said: "When I arrived I was shown where the crane had toppled over on to its side.
"On these cranes the driver's cab is situated about 10 feet from the ground, and in this case the impact had caused the driver to fall through the glass cab.
"His colleagues were initially able to speak to him and give him reassurance that help had arrived."
Thurrock's acting duty manager, Ian Bruce, added: "We worked very hard to save the patient, including life-support and other critical care procedures.
"However, despite all of our care and treatment, his condition rapidly deteriorated and we sadly declared the patient deceased at the scene.
"Our thoughts are with the family."
