A local communist party official was among five people killed when a crane collapsed at a Sinovel factory in China’s Gansu province, it has emerged.
The accident took place around 11pm on Monday as a sub-contractor – named as Ningxia Tianxin Construction and Development – was making preparations for the erection of a 5MW turbine at Sinovel’s Jiuquan wind equipment plant.
The arm of the crane broke off and fell during the operation, instantly crushing five people to death.
Among those killed was Yu Yongdong, the deputy secretary of Jiuquan’s Suzhou district and the management committee secretary of the Jiuquan Industrial Park.
His wife, also a city government official, was also killed, along with the director of the industrial park and two others.
A sixth person was hurt but his injuries are not life-threatening.
In a statement, Sinovel expresses its condolences to the victims and their families and says it is fully co-operating with the relevant departments in the investigation of the accident.
Crane company Zoomlion is understood to have sent a team to the site to assist in the inquiry.
Sinovel denies reports that the accident took place during the actual erection of a 5MW machine, or that it was connected with a ceremony at the factory.
The wind group says the contractor was undertaking preparatory operations for the process, and that the ground-breaking ceremony for the successful hoisting of its first 5MW turbine was held on 14 June.
Sinovel is China’s largest turbine manufacturer and global number two.
In January, reports emerged from China that three people were killed during the installation and testing of Sinovel turbines in the eastern province of Hebei.
Last year, Sinovel blamed factors including strong winds and a fire for turbine collapses at a project in Liaoning province and at a wind farm in Guazhou, also in Gansu province.
