A crane lifting an in-ground swimming pool into place has tipped over in a suburban street in Palmerston.

The truck carrying the crane tipped almost at right angles, sending its arm crashing through the roof of a carport.

The pool fell on to the ground, a hole gouged into it by the chain it had been hooked to.

Police sealed off Goss Circuit in Palmerston as Work Safety inspectors assessed the damage.

The owner of the house and swimming pool says he is relieved no-one was injured in the accident.

Chris Eynon says insurers are investigating, and he has apologised for the damage to neighbouring houses.

"The main concern that I had was the safety of the operators and also for myself," he said.

"With regard to the damage to the buildings, there's not much I can do about that.

"I am apologetic to the owners of the neighbouring properties, but again the investigation will take care of that."
