A 56-year-old construction worker was taken to a local hospital after he slipped and his lower left arm was severed by construction machinery.

The accident happened at the intersection of FM 436 and Jamie Drive just outside Belton.

Officials say the man was working in a 25-foot deep trench putting in water lines when he slipped and his lower left arm, just below the elbow, was ripped off by an auger.

Bell County Fire and Rescue were able to locate the severed limb and put it on ice.

The man was airlifted to Scott and White Hospital.

His condition is unknown at this time.
