Three workers died and two were injured when the cable of a hoist broke on a construction site in southern Vietnam, a hospital staff and state media reported Tuesday.

The injured were in critical condition, a health officer of Can Tho province's general hospital they were being treated.

The five workers were sitting in the hoist, normally only used for construction materials, when the cable snapped, state-run newspaper Nong Nghiep Viet Nam reported.

An initial investigation showed that the accident occurred due to overloading, the state-run newspaper Thanh Nien reported.

It was the latest of several labour accidents reported recently.

On Sunday, a pregnant construction worker died and seven others were injured when the roof of the hotel they were working at collapsed in a city in central Vietnam. Police said the pillars supporting the roof were not strong enough.

A total of 5,125 labour accidents were reported last year, killing 601 people, up 51 people compared with 2009.
