The driver of a bulldozer that went into a sandpit near the city of Kearney wastewater treatment plant Friday morning is from Niobrara.
The victim is a 75-year-old man, a Friday afternoon press release from the Buffalo County Attorney’s Office said. The man’s name hasn’t been released pending notification of family members.
At 9:41 a.m. Friday, Kearney Volunteer Fire Department firefighters were called to the sandpit southeast of Kearney near the treatment plant at 507 Cherry Ave. because of a possible drowning. According to emergency radio traffic, the victim had been working on a bulldozer that went into the sandpit. The pool is about 30 feet deep.
Members of the fire department’s dive team found the man’s body about noon.
Authorities haven’t said what caused the bulldozer to go into the water. The incident remains under investigation by the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office and Kearney Police Department’s Fatality Accident Investigation team.
The treatment plant is one-half mile east and one-quarter mile north of the Great Platte River Road Archway.
