The owner of a Strathmore-based home building company was killed in a workplace incident that police are calling an unfortunate accident.

Claude Gauvin, 46, the founder of Trendsetter Homes, was at the work site of a new home west of Millarville near Highway 762 late Tuesday afternoon.

Strathmore Mayor Steve Grajczyk noted Gauvin’s contribution to the town east of Calgary.

“He was a very, very spirited man and actually a great part in building this community. When he came here, the population was much less, and he built hundreds of homes for many families,” said Grajczyk.

“It is a great loss to the community,” Grajczyk told the Strathmore Times.

Turner Valley RCMP say the man was sitting on the backhoe when the machine started to slide into the trench he was working in.

“He climbed off the back seat and was trying to get back into the cab of the backhoe when, for whatever reason, the pressure and weight of the machine came down and he got pinned between the backhoe and the cab of the Bobcat,” said Cpl. Allen Busch.

EMS arrived quickly, but the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Criminal charges are unlikely, said Busch.

“There’s nothing criminal at all to it,” said Busch. “It was just an extremely sad set of events that ultimately ended someone’s life.”

Occupational Health and Safety are investigating.

“The investigation will look at all the facts in the case including the cause and whether compliance with OH&S legislation was being met,” said spokeswoman Sorcha Thomas.
